Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was indicted Saturday for abuse of power and obstruction of official duties over his December 3, 2024, martial law declaration, which sparked a national crisis.
Yoon, who deployed troops to parliament to block lawmakers from overturning the decree, was impeached and removed from office in April 2025.
Arrested in January, released in March, and detained again last week over evidence tampering concerns, Yoon faces charges for bypassing cabinet protocols and falsifying documents claiming ministerial support for martial law.
He also allegedly ordered record destruction and military provocations. On Friday, Yoon unsuccessfully contested his detention, citing health issues, and remains in solitary confinement amid a heatwave.
The indictment follows insurrection charges, with potential life imprisonment looming.
