Dino Melaye Resigns from PDP, Cites Leadership Failure and Governance Shortfalls

Senator Dino Melaye, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and former Kogi West Senator, has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dealing a significant blow to the opposition party.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 31, 2025, Melaye attributed his decision to the PDP’s inability to provide effective leadership and meet the expectations of Nigerians for good governance.

Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in Kogi State during the 2023 elections, expressed frustration with the party’s internal dynamics and its failure to address critical national issues.

“The PDP has lost its way as a platform for progress and accountability,” Melaye said. “It has failed to offer the kind of leadership Nigerians deserve, and I can no longer align myself with a party that does not prioritize good governance and the welfare of the people.”

The resignation follows a tumultuous period for Melaye within the PDP, marked by his suspension in September 2024 for alleged anti-party activities.

The suspension, issued by the Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1 executive committee in Kogi State, cited Melaye’s conduct as detrimental to the party’s unity and reputation.

Melaye had previously accused the PDP’s acting National Chairman, Iliya Damagum, National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, of commercializing and privatizing the party, further deepening internal rifts.

Melaye, known for his outspoken style and political theatrics, has not disclosed his next political move but hinted at remaining active in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“My commitment to the Nigerian people remains unwavering,” he stated. “I will continue to fight for justice, equity, and progress, with or without the PDP.”
