Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, has withdrawn the indigeneship bill from parliament to allow for further legislative engagements.
In a statement issued Tuesday night, Kalu explained that the decision was prompted by concerns and constructive feedback from stakeholders, as well as a Bill Analysis Report from the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
The report noted that while the bill aimed to achieve commendable objectives, it could lead to challenges, particularly regarding double or multiple indigeneship.
It suggested that states should enact laws to grant settlers the same rights as indigenes, in line with constitutional provisions, without discrimination.
Kalu emphasized his commitment to ensuring legislative proposals reflect the aspirations of Nigerians.
“As leaders and representatives, we are dedicated to ensuring every legislative proposal aligns with the people’s wishes,” he said.
He revealed that the Constitution Review process remains open, inclusive, and participatory, with no proposal moving forward without adequate dialogue and consensus.
He urged citizens to continue engaging with the House Committee on Constitutional Review to build a more just, united, and prosperous Nigeria.
