Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man, has filed paperwork to begin construction of a deep seaport near his fertilizer and oil refinery plants.
The proposed seaport aims to facilitate the export of goods, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), and support the growth of his industrial empire. The seaport will be located in Olokola, Ogun state, approximately 100 kilometers from Dangote's fertilizer plant and petrochemical refinery in Lagos.
The project aims to link Dangote's logistics and export operations, rivaling facilities in Lagos, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port.
The Lekki Deep Seaport, opened in 2023, currently has a capacity of 1.2 million TEUs per year, with plans to expand to 2.7 million TEUs annually.
Dangote plans to construct pipelines from Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta to export LNG from Lagos. The goal is to undertake a major project to bring more gas than Nigeria LNG Ltd., a joint venture between the government and several oil companies.
Dangote believes the project will encourage other entrepreneurs to invest in the region. The seaport and LNG export project are expected to contribute to the economic growth of Nigeria and the surrounding region.
