A kindergarten principal in northwestern China has been detained after more than 200 children fell ill with potential lead poisoning.
The children, who attended Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui city, ate date cakes and corn rolls contaminated with high levels of lead.
Investigators found "abnormal" levels of lead in the blood of 233 children, with 201 receiving hospital treatment. Tests revealed the contaminated food contained over 2,000 times the national safety standard for lead.
Security footage showed kitchen staff adding packaged yellow coloring to the flour mix, which contained lead. The coloring was marked inedible and purchased online. The principal and investor allowed staff to use this coloring, leading to the contamination.
The principal, Zhu, and investor, Li, along with six others, have been detained. Two others are on bail pending trial. Authorities are continuing to investigate and ensure the safety of the children.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about food safety in China. Although standards have improved, recent scandals, such as contaminated milk formula and cooking oil transported in fuel containers, have sparked public outrage.
