Former presidential spokesperson Mallam Garba Shehu has revealed that the late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari consistently declined lavish personal gifts during his tenure, including a diamond-studded wristwatch and a private aircraft.
The disclosure, made during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, July 25, 2025, has sparked widespread reactions amid ongoing debates about Buhari’s legacy following his passing earlier this month.
Shehu, who served as Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Buhari from 2015 to 2023, recounted instances where wealthy individuals and foreign dignitaries offered extravagant gifts to the former president.
“President Buhari was a man of integrity who lived by example,” Shehu said. “I recall a particular instance when a prominent businessman offered him a diamond-studded wristwatch worth millions of naira.
He rejected it outright, insisting that such gifts were inappropriate for a public servant.”In another instance, Shehu disclosed that a foreign entity proposed gifting Buhari a private aircraft for his personal use.
“The offer came with assurances that it would ease his travels, but he turned it down, stating that his needs were adequately met by the presidential fleet,” Shehu added.
According to the former aide, Buhari directed that all such gifts be returned or redirected to government coffers, emphasizing his commitment to transparency and accountability.
These revelations come at a time when Buhari’s legacy is under scrutiny, particularly following the controversial decision by the Tinubu administration to rename the University of Maiduguri after him.
Supporters of the late president have cited Shehu’s comments as evidence of Buhari’s frugality and principled leadership, while critics argue that his administration’s economic policies overshadowed such personal gestures.
Analysts note that Buhari’s rejection of lavish gifts aligns with his public persona as a disciplined and modest leader, often highlighted during his campaigns and presidency.
