The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members across the country to embark on a nationwide strike following the federal government’s failure to pay June 2025 salaries. The union said the action is in line with its “No Pay, No Work” policy.
ASUU branches at the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already complied with the directive, suspending academic activities.
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development on Monday in Abuja, stating that the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) had earlier resolved that members should withdraw their services if salaries are delayed for more than three days.
Prof. Piwuna criticised government officials for their indifference to the plight of university lecturers, who he said are already grappling with poor remuneration. He also blamed the persistent salary delays on the transition from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).
He noted that the union had engaged relevant authorities, including the Minister of Education and the Accountant General of the Federation, but with no result. As a result, the NEC’s “No Pay, No Work” resolution is now being enforced.
“All those concerned are aware of what’s going on. Our members are suffering, and we are tired of repeating ourselves,” Piwuna said. He added that any university yet to receive June salaries is expected to join the strike action.
