Aisha Yesufu Condemns Nigeria’s Judiciary for Failing Nigeria and Betraying its Oath

Prominent activist and human rights campaigner Aisha Yesufu has launched a blistering attack on Nigeria’s judiciary, accusing it of betraying the constitution and the citizens it is meant to serve.

In an interview with ARISE NEWS on Monday, Yesufu described the judiciary as a “plaything of corrupt politicians,” no longer a protector of the common man but a compromised institution manipulated by the political elite.

Speaking in response to recent controversies, including the ongoing case of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is fighting to resume her role at the National Assembly, Yesufu decried the judiciary’s failure to uphold justice. “Our Nigerian judiciary, they should wake up,” she urged.

“They’ve failed the system, they’ve failed the country, they’ve failed even the oath that they swore.”Yesufu highlighted a troubling trend of selective compliance with court rulings, pointing to instances where institutions like the National Assembly have ignored judicial injunctions, such as those related to the suspension of legislators.

“They didn’t listen, they didn’t bother,” she said, arguing that such disregard undermines the judiciary’s authority and emboldens impunity. She further criticized judges for appearing swayed by the “body language” of powerful political figures.

“Politicians are the ones dictating a lot of things for our judiciary,” Yesufu asserted, accusing the system of becoming a tool for the elite rather than a defender of justice.

She expressed alarm at the brazenness with which politicians manipulate the courts, openly daring citizens to seek redress because “they know they own the courts.

”Calling for urgent reform, Yesufu urged the judiciary to “sit up” and initiate an internal overhaul to restore its credibility and independence.

“The judiciary in itself should begin to reorganize itself in a way that it’s more effective for the people,” she said, emphasizing the need for a system where the common man can find solace, not one where justice is dictated by political influence.

Her remarks have sparked widespread discussion, with many Nigerians echoing her call for a reformed judiciary that serves the people, not the powerful.

As public frustration mounts over perceived judicial failures, Yesufu’s critique adds urgency to the demand for systemic change in Nigeria’s governance.
