A violent clash between Fulani and Gwari residents in Gurfata village, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, has left one person de@d and 31 houses razed, escalating ethnic tensions in the community.
The conflict was sparked around 10:30 a.m. when a disagreement erupted between Shaibu Adamu, a Fulani man, and Sa’adu, a Gwari farmer, over Adamu’s attempt to pass through Sa’adu’s farmland without cattle.
Sa’adu objected, insisting on an alternative route, which led to a heated argument and a physical altercation, leaving both men with minor injuries, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.
The incident quickly spiraled, reigniting long-standing ethnic rivalries. Community members from both sides rallied in support of Adamu and Sa’adu, escalating tensions.
The situation took a deadly turn when Adamu Ibrahim, Shaibu’s elder brother, allegedly attacked Dahiru Yakubu, a Gwari resident, with a machete.
Yakubu was rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.Yakubu’s death triggered a fierce reprisal by Gwari youths, who stormed the Fulani settlement in Gurfata, setting 31 houses ablaze and injuring at least three individuals.
Nigerian Army troops and joint security personnel were swiftly deployed to quell the violence and restore order.
By Wednesday, July 30, 2025, calm had been restored, though the village remains on edge.FCT authorities have called for restraint and urged both communities to pursue peace. Mediation efforts are underway to address grievances and prevent further escalation.
