Ahead of the 2027 elections, the African Democratic Congress, ADC, says it is considering two options on how its presidential candidate will emerge.
At least three members of the coalition of opposition
leaders who recently adopted the party are harboring presidential ambition.
The former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, former Governor
of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, and presidential candidate of the Labour Party
in the last election, Peter Obi, have on different occasions declared their
intentions to run for the number one job.
This, according to some analysts, will fuel crisis in the
party and pave the way for the ruling party to retain its victory.
Speaking on Channels TV on Monday, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC
spokesman, said the party is considering consensus and primary election.
According to him, if the party fails to achieve consensus,
it will go into primary election.
He said, “We are preoccupied with the development of our
party and building structures and putting up necessary systems that will show
Nigerians that we are indeed a democratic party.
“Along the line, we are going to act on who becomes the
party’s flagbearer and we are going to do so in a very transparent and
democratic way.
“We have two options. One of the options on the table is to
engineer a consensus and if that is not achieved, we go into primaries that
will be transparent and whoever emerges, the party supports.”
