Social commentator Morris Monye has ignited a heated online debate after labeling the $100,000 reward promised to each Super Falcons player as “a bit excessive” amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.
In a post on X, Monye wrote, “With the widespread poverty and excessive borrowing we are doing, the $100,000 reward money for each Super Falcons is a bit excessive.”
While acknowledging the positive intent behind the reward, he urged a reevaluation of national priorities, stating, “The idea behind the reward money is fantastic, but we can’t be borrowing money every time while the average man in Nigeria is dying in hunger and we are splashing money for a select few.”
Quoting late revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara, Monye added, “It’s better for everyone to drink clean water than a select few to drink Champagne.”The statement has divided opinions online.
Some Nigerians support Monye’s call to prioritize basic needs and infrastructure, while others defend the Super Falcons, arguing that their representation and success on the global stage justify the substantial reward.
The debate continues to unfold as Nigerians weigh the balance between celebrating national achievements and addressing pressing economic realities.
