US Imposes Travel Ban and Restrictions on 19 Countries

President Donald Trump has announced a travel ban on citizens of 12 countries and imposed restrictions on visitors from 7 others, citing national security concerns.

The countries under the ban include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Additionally, visitors from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela will face heightened restrictions.

These restrictions aim to enhance national security by preventing potential threats from entering the United States.

Trump stated, "I must act to protect the national security and national interest of the United States and its people." The ban and restrictions result from an executive order issued in January, requiring a report on "hostile attitudes" toward the US and potential national security risks.

This move echoes Trump's previous travel ban in 2017, which targeted predominantly Muslim countries. The Supreme Court upheld the order in 2018. The new restrictions will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, June 09, 2025.
