A devastating suicide bombing occurred at the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Dweil'a, near Damascus, Syria, on June 22, 2025. Here's what we know so far.
A suicide bomber entered the church during Sunday prayers, firing shots before detonating an explosive vest. This horrific act killed at least 20 people and injured 52 others, including children.
Witnesses reported seeing people "blown to bits," and Father Fadi Ghattas, who was present during the attack, confirmed seeing at least 20 fatalities among the 350 attendees.
Although no group immediately claimed responsibility, the Syrian Interior Ministry attributed the attack to an extremist from the Islamic State group.
Syrian Information Minister, Hamza Mostafa condemned the attack as a "cowardly act" that goes against civic values, reaffirming the government's commitment to combat terrorism and protect society.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported at least 19 deaths and numerous injuries, highlighting ongoing concerns about extremist threats in Syria.
