South Korean authorities have arrested six American nationals for allegedly trying to send plastic bottles packed with rice, Bibles, and U.S. currency into North Korea.
The arrests took place near Ganghwa Island, a border region northwest of Seoul, on Thursday, June 26. The suspects were apprehended near Ganghwa Island, which is less than 10 kilometers from North Korea's maritime border.
The Americans, aged between their 20s and 50s, are suspected of violating the Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety.
Ganghwa Island has been a common launch site for non-profit groups and anti-Pyongyang activists sending items to North Korea. These items often include food, money, and materials promoting South Korean culture and religion.
However, the South Korean government has recently designated this area as a danger zone, warning that such activities could be seen as provocative by North Korea.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions between North and South Korea. The two countries have engaged in a propaganda campaign, with North Korea launching trash-filled balloons into the South and Seoul responding with border broadcasts.
However, South Korea's new president has promised a more conciliatory approach, and recent developments suggest a possible easing of tensions.
The six Americans are currently being questioned by South Korean authorities, with the help of an interpreter. The outcome of the investigation will determine the next course of action.
