The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has met with Benue State’s two foremost traditional rulers as part of a presidential directive to establish a strategic peace committee aimed at ending the lingering violence in the state.
The meeting, held in Benue, brought together the Tor Tiv,
His Royal Majesty Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal
Majesty Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John.
It marked the beginning of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s
renewed intervention to restore peace and security in Nigeria’s food basket.
Speaking during the engagement, Senator Akume conveyed
President Tinubu’s deep concern over the spate of violent attacks and described
the situation as “heartbreaking.” He reiterated the Federal Government’s
commitment to halting the bloodshed and restoring stability in Benue and across
the country.
“The President is determined to end the senseless killings
in the food basket of the nation,” Akume stated.
According to a statement issued by the Director of
Information and Public Relations, Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, the SGF
urged the royal fathers to maintain vigilance in their domains.
“We want to appeal to you to continue to stay vigilant so
that miscreants do not infiltrate the communities. Whenever you observe a
breach, do not hesitate to inform us. The President will never disappoint you,”
Akume assured.
