Angry women from Okpavuerhe Olomu Community, in Delta State's Ughelli South Local Government Area, staged a protest to demand action from authorities.
The women, led by Mrs. Kesiena Arigi, Mrs. Lucy Aki, Mrs. Grace Edevwie, and Miss Aghogho Edole, chanted war songs and carried leaves as they marched to the Council Chairman's office.
The women reported living in fear due to violent attacks by cultists and hoodlums linked to a leadership tussle in their community.
They claimed these groups had taken over their farmlands, chasing them away with dangerous weapons. One victim had already been macheted nearly to death.
Dr. Lucky Avweromre, the Council Chairman, warned the warring leadership factions to stop escalating the crisis. He promised to deal with anyone causing trouble and thanked the women for their peaceful demonstration.
Avweromre revealed he had previously organized a roundtable dialogue to resolve the issue but was shocked by the resistance to government orders.
According to the Council Chairman, “It is a breach of the law for any of the warring parties to engage or seek the assistance of hired hoodlums to take over Okpavuerhe farmlands.
“We had earlier waded into the leadership issue. Anyone using any means to forbid the people in general and the women in particular from working on their farms or preventing them from engaging in their legitimate business will face the law.” He stated.
Avweromre, however, appealed for calm, assuring that the government of Sheriff Oborevwori would do all to restore peace in the community.
