Police Welfare: IGP Probes Retired Officer's Pension Complaint

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an investigation into the pension benefits of a retired superintendent of police who claimed to have received only N2 million after 35 years of service.

The retired officer's allegations were made in a widely shared video on social media. The officer, who retired on October 1, 2023, stated that he was notified by the Nigeria Police Pension Board that N3 million in retirement benefits had been approved. However, he expressed strong disagreement with the amount, which included N2 million for his terminal benefit and N1 million in arrears.

Following the release of the video, the IGP issued a statement through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, directing the NPF Pensions Limited to investigate the claims immediately, find any potential errors, and make sure the right steps are taken to resolve the issues brought up.

The IGP underlined that the welfare of active and retired employees continues to be of utmost importance, pointing out that timely and efficient pension administration is essential to preserving employee morale and the institution's integrity.

Egbetokun acknowledged that efforts to enhance the pension system have been ongoing, but he said that encouraging criticism—like the one featured in the viral video—is crucial to enacting the necessary changes directed the NPF Pensions Limited to investigate the claims immediately and take necessary steps to resolve the issues.
