Two students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, were whisked away by security operatives for protesting against FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike during a lecture.
Oladepo Joshua and Ejike Kelechi held placards calling out Wike to compensate people whose houses he demolished in Abuja. The students were taken to the university's security base, known as "Floor 0," in the Senate Building.
The university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, claimed the students weren't arrested but were escorted out for their safety. He stated that the students' actions could have led to a confrontation with their colleagues, who were accusing them of disrupting the event.
The incident has sparked controversy, with some student groups and activists condemning the action. The Alliance of Nigerian Students Against Neoliberal Attacks (ANSA) and the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) have demanded the students' release. OAU has a history of radical student activism, and the incident has raised concerns about freedom of expression on campus.
Lawyers under the law firm NEWWORTH LLP have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the university and security forces, demanding the release of the detained students. If not released, they will initiate legal proceedings in the public interest.
