President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a firm directive to
Lagos State and other subnational governments, warning against granting
planning approvals for unauthorised islands and developments encroaching on
designated road setbacks and maritime areas.
Speaking on Thursday at the official commissioning of the
Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road, Tinubu expressed pride in the realization of
the project, which he initiated during his tenure as Lagos State governor. He
lauded the access road as a legacy infrastructure that will enhance logistics
efficiency, cut costs for port users, and strengthen economic returns on
investment.
However, the president turned his attention to what he
described as “illegal island creation” and unregulated land reclamation, which
he said undermines long-term infrastructure planning and national development
objectives.
“I have directed the Honorable Minister of Works, the
Surveyor-General of the Federation, and all state governors—this legacy project
must be protected,” Tinubu declared. “Let us procure a stable setback for
future expansion and infrastructure building to enhance our road architecture.”
He cautioned that all planning approvals granted on existing
setbacks without federal collaboration will be revoked, with special emphasis
on the ongoing developments in Lagos.
“Please, our dear governors, let’s work together. Don’t give
planning approvals without collaborating with the Surveyor-General of the
Federation and Ministry of Works,” Tinubu appealed. “I’m glad the Deputy
Governor of Lagos State is here, taking note—we will revoke all those approvals
already given on the setback. No more planning approvals for those unapproved
islands being created illegally.”

The president emphasised the need for coordinated
infrastructure development that aligns with national priorities, warning that
unsanctioned urban expansion would no longer be tolerated.
Earlier in his remarks, Tinubu celebrated the progress of
the Lekki Port project, calling it a “huge success” and a symbol of the
potential of public-private partnerships. “I can brag about that,” he said with
pride.
He also commended business magnate Aliko Dangote for his
massive investment in the region, referencing the nearby Dangote Refinery, which
he described as “a great phenomenon” and “a massive investment” that
underscores belief in Nigeria’s future.
