The National Judicial Council (NJC) has compulsorily retired 10 judges in Imo State for age falsification and other unethical practices.
The decision was made during the NJC's 109th meeting, on Thursday, presided over by Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
The retired judges include:
- High Court Judges:
- Justice M.E. Nwagboso
- Justice B.C. Iheka
- Justice K.A. Leaweanya
- Justice Chinyere Ngozi Okereke
- Justice Innocent Chidi Ibeawuchi
- Customary Court of Appeal Judges:
- Justice Tennyson Nze
- Justice Uchenna Ofoha
- Justice Everyman Eleanya
- Justice Rosemond Ibe
The NJC also compulsorily retired Justice T.N. Nzeukwu, for submitting himself for appointment as acting Chief Judge despite being fourth in seniority, violating Section 271(4) of the 1999 Constitution.
The NJC recommended 21 candidates for judicial appointment across several jurisdictions. The NJC barred Hon. Justice Isaac J. Essien from elevation for three years and sanctioned five other judges for various breaches.
They dismissed petitions against four federal and state judges, finding no merit or noting voluntary withdrawal by petitioners. Peter N. Ekemezie, a serial petitioner, was officially blacklisted from submitting future complaints to the Council.
The NJC's actions demonstrate its commitment to upholding the integrity and accountability of the judiciary. The compulsory retirement of the 10 judges sends a strong message about the consequences of age falsification and other unethical practices.
