The Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, has announced that Nigeria is shifting its focus from foreign military procurement to local production. This move aims to enhance national security, boost efficiency, and reduce reliance on imported hardware.
This was revealed in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday, June 04, by Mati Ali, the Personal Assistant on Media and Publicity to the minister, Badaru.
According to Badaru, the shift to local production marks a significant stride towards self-reliance. He made this known after a 2-day working tour of military institutions and facilities in Kaduna, where he inspected workshops and praised the ongoing efforts in training, local production, and refurbishing military assets.
The minister highlighted the importance of training, research, development, and innovation in achieving operational excellence. He also commended the Armed Forces for their initiative and urged continued collaborations between institutions and investment in military research and development.
Badaru noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to transforming Nigeria's defense capabilities, citing the recent signing of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Bill into law.
