The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology has announced plans to build affordable and durable smart houses for low- and medium-income earners using bamboo plants.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday, June 11.
This initiative aims to provide a scalable solution to Nigeria's growing housing needs while promoting environmental sustainability.
The ministry plans to utilize bamboo, along with other proven technologies, to construct smart houses that are adaptable, comfortable, and affordable.
Bamboo is a versatile, fast-growing, and low-emission building material that can help reduce carbon footprint and promote eco-friendly construction practices.
Despite the benefits, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, noted that challenges such as high initial capital costs and unstable supply of raw materials need to be addressed.
The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) is working to develop sustainable solutions and integrate bamboo into housing construction, with a focus on reducing environmental impact.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to harness the potential of bamboo in Nigeria's development, including job creation, environmental conservation, and economic growth.
