The Nigeria Police Force's National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has successfully dismantled a sophisticated cyber fraud syndicate responsible for hijacking WhatsApp accounts of prominent citizens and attempting to defraud their contacts.
The operation was triggered by an official complaint filed on April 14, 2025, through advanced digital forensics and strategic investigations, the police traced the fraudulent activities across multiple Nigerian banks and froze illicit funds amounting to millions of naira.
One key suspect, Onajite Okoro, was arrested in Warri, Delta State. Okoro confessed to collaborating with an accomplice, "Chief Mallam Zaki," whom he met via Facebook, and admitted to facilitating the fraud by registering SIM cards, linking them to bank accounts, and assisting in illicit fund transfer.

Further analysis of Okoro’s fraudulent equipment and financial records has yielded concrete evidence of his involvement in the fraudulent scheme. The investigation also revealed additional syndicate members still at large.''
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, emphasized the police force's commitment to responding decisively to evolving digital threats.
The police urged citizens to adopt safer digital practices, including securing communication channels, using multi-factor authentication, and remaining alert to suspicious messages, even from trusted sources.
