NAFDAC Cracks Down on Substandard Rice Milling Companies in Nasarawa

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed four local rice milling companies in Nasarawa State for violating regulatory standards. The agency also seized empty branded bags of rice, sealing machines, and other items belonging to the companies.

The raid was carried out on Tuesday, June 03, in Autabalefi area, Masaka main market, and motor pack, all in Nasarawa State. NAFDAC's Deputy Director, Greater FCT Office, Mrs. Benedicta Obaseki, said the agency took the action to prevent the circulation of substandard rice in the market, especially with the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Seized items includes- Empty branded bags of rice belonging to popular rice brands

- Sealing machines

- Sowing thread

- Middle

- Packing bowl

- Two 50 kg bags of rice belonging to the local milling companies

NAFDAC also put on hold the Nigeria Brewery, Masaka Depot, for poor storage of drinks. The agency noted that the large quantity of drinks arranged outside the brewery building under the sun were not hygienic for consumption

Obaseki emphasized that NAFDAC is committed to ensuring the safety and quality of food products in the market. She urged Nigerians to be vigilant and buy rice from reputable sources, stressing that fake rice poses a great danger to health.

Some of the companies whose businesses were sealed denied any wrongdoing. The managers of the companies claimed they only milled and packaged rice for customers and did not engage in any illicit activities.

However, NAFDAC remains firm in its stance, stating that the companies did not comply with regulatory standards.
