A controversy has erupted over the alleged diversion of N4.1 billion meant for primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Enemakwu Ameh, the Treasurer of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the FCT, in an interview with ARISE TV, claims the funds were diverted as "signature allowance" instead of being used to support teachers' minimum wage payments.
Ameh alleges that the N4.1 billion allocation was meant to assuage the payment of the new minimum wage to primary school teachers but was instead misappropriated. The funds were reportedly allocated by the FCT Minister to Area Council Chairmen.
Ameh described the situation of primary education in the FCT as "unbelievable," highlighting that teachers have not benefited from the new minimum wage despite the allocation.
