Lionel Messi has shared his thoughts on his legendary rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, revealing a deep respect and admiration for his fellow football icon.
After Inter Miami's 2-1 win over FC Porto in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Messi spoke to reporters about his relationship with Ronaldo.
Messi expressed his high regard for Ronaldo, citing his remarkable career and continued success at the highest level, and described their rivalry as limited to the pitch, where each player aimed to perform their best for their team.
"I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo, for the career he has built and continues to build. He is still competing at the highest level.
The rivalry was on the pitch... Each of us always wanted to do everything possible for our team.
Off the pitch, we're just two regular guys. We’re not friends because we don’t spend time together, but we have always treated each other with great respect," Messi admitted.
He characterized their off-pitch relationship as cordial, with mutual respect, although they aren't close friends due to limited personal interaction.
Messi and Ronaldo have captivated football fans for over 15 years with their incredible skills and achievements, including a combined 13 Ballon d'Or titles.
