A tragic incident struck Osara village in the Obantoko area of Odeda Local Government, Ogun State, on Saturday, as lightning killed 32 cows during a heavy downpour.
The cows were reportedly taking shelter in their sheds under the care of Fulani herders when the lightning struck around 2 pm. The shock of the incident left the herders devastated.
According to the village head, Baale Wasiu Afolabi, the herders discovered the lifeless animals after the storm and immediately informed him. “On Saturday, the Fulani herders came to me at home to report that lightning had killed 32 of their cows. I followed them to the scene and saw the d+adcows. We’ve reported it to the Aregbe Police Division and the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo,” he said.
Afolabi also noted that a meeting has been scheduled with the affected herders to discuss safety precautions and avoid tension or disruption within the community.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, said in a statement to journalists that the case was reported to the Divisional Police Officer of Aregbe. “32 cows were struck dead when thunder and lightning occurred during a heavy downpour,” he stated, adding that police operatives were promptly dispatched to the area.
