Lagos State Issues Order to Oversee Electricity Operations

The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) has issued a landmark directive establishing a regulatory framework for electricity market operations within Lagos State.

This move marks the official end of the transition of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to LASERC.

The directive, Order No. LASERC ORDER/001/2025, is based on the Electricity Act 2023 and the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024. Effective immediately, no individual or entity can engage in regulated electricity activities within Lagos without a valid license or permit from LASERC.

The commission has made it clear that licenses obtained from other regulatory authorities will not be recognized under the new regime.

This means that all operators in the electricity market in Lagos state must obtain the necessary licenses and permits from LASERC to continue operating.

The new regulatory framework is expected to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of electricity regulation in Lagos State.

LASERC's oversight will ensure that electricity market operations in the state are conducted in a safe, reliable, and sustainable manner.

“This Order reinforces LASERC’s mandate to ensure a safe, efficient, and reliable electricity market in Lagos,” said Dr. Fouad Animashaun, CEO and Executive Commissioner of LASERC. “We are committed to upholding global standards and protecting electricity users and investor interests in the evolving power sector.
