Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, a member of the House of Representatives representing Enugu North and South federal constituency, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This was announced on the floor of the House during plenary by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who read Atu's defection letter.
Atu cited internal leadership crises within the Labour Party as the reason for his departure, claiming it had disrupted his ability to effectively carry out his legislative responsibilities.
He also expressed support for President Bola Tinubu's administration, particularly in the South-East region, noting the government's development efforts.
Minority Whip Ali Isa objected to Atu's defection and demanded that his seat be declared vacant. However, Speaker Abbas acknowledged the point of order but declined to rule on it.
Interestingly, all thirteen ward chairmen and key Labour Party stakeholders in Enugu South have declared their support for Atu, vowing to follow him wherever he leads.
