Kano State Seeks Compensation for Cancelled Durbar Celebrations

The Kano State Government has requested compensation from the Federal Government for the cancellation of the Durbar celebrations for two consecutive years.

The state's Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Tajo Uthman, made the call on Sunday during the Sallah homage paid by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The state suffered significant financial losses due to the cancellation of the annual cultural event, which attracts local and international tourists, and has affected the state's annual budget.

“The Durbar is recognised by UNESCO as a heritage event. During the festivities, Kano generates substantial revenue from both foreigners and visitors from across the country,” he said.

Uthman stressed that the Federal Government must take responsibility for the economic impact of the cancellations and compensate the state accordingly.

He also called for the immediate resumption of Durbar celebrations in the state, describing the cancellations as regrettable.

The Durbar festival is a significant cultural event in Kano State, and its cancellation has had a notable economic impact on the state.
