Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has renamed two sports institutions after the 22 athletes from the state who died while returning from the National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun.
On May 31, a bus carrying the Kano contingent back to the state from the NSF slipped off the Dakatsalle bridge in Kura LGA.
The accident led to the death of 22 members of the team,
while others sustained injuries.
In a statement on Sunday, Mustapha Muhammed, the chief press
secretary to the governor, said the Kano State Sports Institute and the Kano
State Sports Commission have been named after the dead athletes.
The two institutions will henceforth be known as Kano State
22 Athletes Sports Institute and Kano State Sports Commission.
“The athletes made the state proud and will be remembered
for their sacrifices towards sports development in the state,” the statement
reads.
“The young athletes are heroes of Kano who fought for the
successes we recorded in the National Sports Festival.
“The state government will cater for the education of their
children and engage their widows in empowerment programmes.
“The parents of those who were unmarried would also be
considered in our empowerment plans.
Earlier, Remi Tinubu, the First Lady, also donated N110
million to the deceased families to alleviate the effects of their losses.
