The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that despite interest from various groups, no association has formally applied for registration as a political party.
According to INEC, over 100 associations are in the process, but none have met the necessary requirements.
Requirements for Registration
- Letter of Intent: The first step is submitting a letter of intent, which several groups have done.
- Meeting Criteria: Associations must meet specific criteria before submitting a formal application.
- Formal Application: INEC emphasizes that a formal application is required for the registration process to proceed.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, told Newsmen that what INEC has received so far are letters of intent and not formal applications.
This development comes amid speculation about new political parties, including the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), which has been linked to the coalition being promoted by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers).
According to Olumekun, the first stage is to submit a letter of intent.
He said: “The truth is that we have so many letters of intent presently and none of them is an application yet. They must first meet the criteria before submitting a letter of intent.”
INEC encourages interested groups to follow the laid-down guidelines and meet the legal and administrative requirements for registration. The commission will review applications once they are formally submitted.
