Abdullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa state, says he will name his preferred successor ahead of the governorship election in 2027.
Sule spoke on Sunday at a stakeholders’ meeting of the APC
in Nasarawa west senatorial zone held in Keffi.
The Nasarawa governor asked governorship aspirants in the
All Progressives Congress (APC) not to overheat the polity.
He said political power ultimately comes from God, adding
that his role as governor includes guaranteeing a level playing field for all
aspirants.
“But A.A. Sule also has the right to support someone. When
the time comes, I’ll clearly name my preferred candidate,” he said.
“And I will not be afraid to publicly endorse who I believe
should succeed me. I am responsible for ensuring the primary election is free,
fair, and transparent.”
The governor appreciated the conveners of the meeting for
promoting peace and unity within the zone.
Sule also encouraged other senatorial zones to hold similar
engagements to strengthen the party’s base across the state.
He commended stakeholders and supporters for conducting
themselves peacefully during the recent visit of President Bola Tinubu to
Nasarawa.
Earlier, Abdullahi Adamu, former APC national chairman, said
the 2027 governorship should be zoned to Nasarawa west.
Adamu said the purpose of the meeting was to build consensus
and mobilise support for the zone’s quest to produce the next governor.
“Keffi zone governed for eight years, Lafia for twelve.
Akwanga is currently serving its second and final term. Therefore, the western
(Keffi) zone should produce the next governor in 2027,” he said.
Adamu called for unity among stakeholders in the zone to
strengthen their chances.
Those present included Abdulkarim Kana, APC legal adviser;
Imaan Ibrahim, minister of women affairs; and Abdulmumin Ari.
Others in attendance were Shuaibu Labaran Magaji, secretary
to the state government; Aliyu Tijani, federal commissioner; and other party
loyalists.
