Gunmen and Military Exchange Gunfire Near Benue IDP Camp

Reports emerged yesterday of a gunfire exchange between suspected herdsmen and military personnel near Tse Asha and Ukange villages in Guma Local Council of Benue State.

This incident comes amid escalating violence between residents of Mbaiase in Gwer East Local Council and Igbinde village in Konshisha Local Council, resulting in houses being razed and properties destroyed.

Witnesses reported the confrontation took place about two kilometers from the Ortese Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. Security operatives have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

The violence between Mbaiase and Igbinde village resulted in many thatched houses being set ablaze and valuable property destroyed. The attack allegedly began around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, stoked by suspected militias from Mbaiase.

Former EFCC chairperson, Mrs. Farida Waziri, visited victims of the Yelewata attack at the IDP camp in Makurdi and called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action to address the worsening security situation in the country. She expressed concern over the deteriorating state of insecurity in Nigeria and urged the President to take "concrete and immediate steps" to address the issue.

The victims of the Yelewata attack are temporarily accommodated at the yet-to-be-commissioned International Market Makurdi, converted to an emergency IDP camp by the state government. The victims have lost their families and livelihoods due to the June 13 massacre, which claimed over 200 lives.
