France is set to implement a nationwide ban on smoking in various public outdoor spaces, including beaches, public parks, bus shelters, and areas surrounding schools, libraries, and swimming pools.
The ban aims to protect children from secondhand smoke and promote a healthier public environment.
Smoking will be prohibited in public parks, gardens, beaches, bus shelters, and areas outside schools, libraries, and swimming pools. Smokers found violating the new rules could face a fine of €135.
Café terraces and bar patios are currently exempt from the ban, but may be included in future phases.
While electronic cigarettes are currently exempt, the government plans to introduce tighter controls on their nicotine levels and flavorings by mid-2026.
The ban aims to shield minors from secondhand smoke and promote a smoke-free generation. A survey revealed that nearly 80% of French citizens support banning smoking in public places, while 83% favor increased regulation of e-cigarettes.
The ban is set to take effect on July 1. Local authorities across France will be responsible for enforcing the ban.
