Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Lawal Uwais, Passes Away at 88

 

Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, has died at the age of 88. He passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025. Uwais was a highly respected figure in Nigeria's legal landscape, known for his commitment to judicial integrity, independence, and systemic reform.


Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in London in 1963, began his legal career as a State Counsel in Northern Nigeria, later becoming a Justice of the Supreme Court in 1979 and Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006.


He championed the independence of the judiciary and led efforts to strengthen the legal framework in Nigeria.


Chaired the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee in 2007, producing a landmark report that advocated for the establishment of an Independent Electoral Offences Commission and reforms to the appointment process of the INEC Chairman.


Uwais, was widely admired for his humility, legal acumen, and principled leadership.


His contributions to Nigeria's legal system continue to be felt, with many regarding him as a towering figure in the country's judicial history.


Funeral rites is scheduled to take place after Juma'at prayers at the National Mosque in Abuja, in accordance with Islamic tradition.
