The Enugu State Government has transmitted an Executive Bill to the State House of Assembly aimed at regulating spiritual practitioners, including native doctors, herbalists, and spiritualists.
The proposed legislation, titled "Maintenance of Internal Security, Vigilance and Order," seeks to checkmate criminal activities among these groups and outlaws practices such as money rituals, known as "okite," and criminal bulletproof charms.
According to the bill, spiritual practitioners would be required to register with a designated ministry, department, or agency, with penalties for practicing without registration ranging from N1-5 million or 2-year imprisonment.
The bill also prescribes punishments for falsely claiming supernatural powers, using religious places for criminal activities, and using human parts in rituals, among other offenses.
The proposed law aims to promote internal security, vigilance, and order in Enugu State.
