Democracy Day: Protest Hits Abuja Amid Heavy Security Presence

A protest has begun in Abuja's Apo area, where demonstrators are voicing their grievances against rising hardship and insecurity in Nigeria.

This comes as Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, marking 26 years of democratic governance.

The protest, organized by the Take It Back Movement, aims to draw attention to the country's economic struggles and governance issues. Demonstrators are chanting solidarity songs and waving placards to express their frustrations.

In anticipation of the protests, security agencies have deployed heavily armed personnel to strategic locations across the city, including major junctions and the National Assembly.

The police have assured law-abiding citizens of protection during the protest.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, Adewale Ajao, has urged citizens to exercise their rights peacefully, promising that security agencies will protect protesters.

Despite this, concerns linger about potential clashes between protesters and security operatives.

The protests aren't limited to Abuja; demonstrations are planned in at least 20 locations nationwide, including Lagos, Oyo, Osun, and Edo states.

Protesters are demanding an end to bad governance, poverty, and insecurity, citing the Tinubu administration's policies as exacerbating their struggles.
