President Bola Tinubu has conferred the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) award on Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
This was confirmed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The award ceremony took place in Lagos on Tuesday, June 03, with top government officials and dignitaries in attendance. The honour recognizes Gates' significant contributions to global health, education, and poverty alleviation, particularly through strategic partnerships with Nigeria.
Gates is currently in Nigeria to discuss primary healthcare reforms with President Tinubu and other senior officials. He will also participate in a Goalkeepers Nigeria event focused on Africa's innovation future and meet with local scientists and partners to shape Nigeria's national strategy on artificial intelligence and healthcare solutions.
The visit follows the Gates Foundation's announcement of a $200 billion commitment over the next 20 years to advance progress on saving and improving lives, with a particular focus on Africa.
