Bill Gates Criticizes Nigeria's Health Budget as Insufficient

Bill Gates, chairman of the Gates Foundation, has expressed concern over Nigeria's low public health investment, citing it as a major factor contributing to the country's high maternal and child mortality rates.

During a media roundtable, Gates urged the Nigerian government to increase its health spending, emphasizing that the current allocation is "very, very small."

Gates criticized Nigeria's health budget, stating that it is insufficient to address the country's healthcare challenges.

He highlighted the link between low health spending and high maternal and child mortality rates.

Gates revealed that he had discussed the issue with President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the need for increased health investment.

Although the Nigerian national assembly increased the 2025 health budget to N2.48 trillion, Gates believes more investment is necessary for meaningful change.

He stressed that adequate funding is crucial for providing quality healthcare, including emergency services like C-sections.

Gates expressed concerns about decreasing global health funding, particularly from the United States.

He emphasized that no private organization can replace the scale of funding previously provided by the US government.

Last month, Gates announced plans to give away nearly all his wealth, an estimated $200 billion, over the next two decades, with a significant portion earmarked for Africa.
