Tukur Buratai, the former chief of army staff, has refuted
claims of an attack on his convoy by suspected terrorists in Borno state.
Speaking on ChannelsTV’s Politics Sunday, Ali Ndume, the
Borno senator, alleged that Buratai was attacked by suspected Boko Haram
members in the state.
But a statement issued on Monday by Sani Usman, the former
army spokesperson, said Buratai, who also served as Nigeria’s ambassador to the
Republic of Benin, is currently in the federal capital territory (FCT).
“For the avoidance of doubt, he celebrated the Eid
festivities peacefully in Abuja, in the company of family, friends and
well-wishers, and has remained within the Federal Capital Territory since
then,” the statement reads.
Usman described the claim of an attack as “mischievous and
utterly false”, accusing the authors of the story of attempting to spread fear
and confusion.
“This baseless rumour is a product of the reckless
imagination of the purveyors of fake news, individuals whose sole aim is to
malign him, spread fear, confusion and misinformation,” the statement added.
“The fabricators of these actions are not only mischievous
but also deeply irresponsible and must be condemned in the strongest terms.”
He expressed appreciation to Nigerians who reached out to
verify the well-being of the retired general.
“I sincerely extend my heartfelt and profound appreciation
to the countless patriotic and well-meaning Nigerians, friends, associates and
admirers of his excellency who reached out with genuine concern, prayers and
goodwill,” he said.
“Your overwhelming show of love and support is deeply
cherished and speaks volumes about the enduring respect and affection we are
privileged to receive from across the country and beyond.”
He advised the public to disregard the reports and warned
those behind the claims to desist.
