The aircraft, operated by Aryan Aviation, took off from the holy site of Kedarnath and was heading to Guptkashi when it went down in a densely forested area around 5:30 a.m. local time. Officials believe the crash site is several miles off the designated pilgrimage route.
Preliminary investigations suggest that poor weather conditions may have caused the crash. Rescue and recovery teams are currently at the scene, while aviation authorities have launched a review of flight safety protocols in Uttarakhand’s difficult mountainous terrain.
This incident comes just days after India was rocked by a much deadlier tragedy, the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which left at least 270 people dead.
In that earlier disaster, a London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a residential building near a medical college hostel shortly after takeoff. Only one of the 242 passengers on board survived. An additional 29 people died on the ground.
In response to the Air India crash, aviation regulators ordered emergency inspections of the airline’s Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 jets with GEnx engines. The inspections will focus on takeoff performance, fuel systems, and electronic.
