A huge setback is about to hit the opposition political parties as one of the biggest parties in the Northern region is set to collapse into the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Emerging reports indicate that plans are underway to bring
the national leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso
into the ruling party ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
Ahead of his reported defection, his followers, particularly
members of the NNPP, have vowed to move with the former Kano governor into the
ruling party.
The Kano State Chairman of the NNPP, Hashimu Dungurawa, who
spoke with DAILY POST on Sunday, declared that wherever their leader goes, they
are ready to follow.
According to him, Kwankwaso remains the biggest opposition
figure in the northern region, stressing that the NNPP leader is capable of
rescuing Nigeria from leadership problems if brought into the APC
administration.
He said, “Kwankwaso is a big name. Aside from the fact that
he has very large followers, there is no political figure in the North that
currently influences and capacity like that of our leader.
“If joining APC is for the betterment of this country, then
may Allah take him there. Currently, the country lacks leadership and
directions.
“At least we have seen the records of Kwankwaso right from
when he was a minister of defence, when he was a Senator and when he served as
the executive governor of Kano State.
“When Kwankwaso was a minister of defence, he brought peace
to Sudan and all these evils were currently happening here and there were not
there.
“So if APC decides to bring him into the government because
of his capacity, no problem. We are his blind followers, wherever he is taking
us, we will follow him, we don’t have a problem.
“I remain his loyal supporter and whatever he decides to do,
I’m always ready to say ‘yes Sir'”.
There are speculations that the leader of the Kwankwasiyya
Movement is being considered as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the
next election.
Although the presidency has kept mum on the matter, there
are strong indications that Kwankwaso is on his way to the ruling party.
According to sources, the National Chairman of APC,
Abdullahi Ganduje tendered his resignation on Friday following the party’s move
to bring Kwankwaso into President Tinubu’s camp ahead of the much anticipated
election.
A party source, who earlier spoke to DAILY POST, had said
that Kwankwaso is expected to decamp to APC “any moment from now, except he
changes his mind again but as of today, the arrangement has been made for that
to happen”.
“It looks like they are sworn enemies, the defection of
Kwankwaso is very important to the APC, especially as 2027 is concerned, but
Ganduje has vowed that he won’t welcome him into the party so he has to step
aside”.
When Ganduje, who is also a former governor of Kano State,
took over the reins of the APC at the national level, several political
analysts believed that his position would reinforce the party’s grip on the
state.
It was also believed that Ganduje would perhaps mount a more
formidable challenge to Kwankwaso’s growing influence in Kano.
However, that did not happen. Instead, the APC in Kano
remained fractured, disjointed, and uncertain, affecting the performance of the
ruling party in the 2023 election.
