At least 20 Nigerian soldiers were reportedly killed in a deadly bandit attack on a military camp near Bangi, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to security sources, the heavily armed assailants launched a surprise assault at dawn, engaging soldiers in a fierce gun battle before eventually overrunning the camp. Several other personnel were said to have sustained injuries during the clash.
Though the Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, some photos of the fallen soldiers have been circulating. Residents in the area are reportedly fleeing, fearing more attacks as insecurity worsens in parts of Niger State.
In a separate incident, terrorists invaded Tofa village in the Magami district of Gusau Local Government Area, Zamfara State, killing over 15 residents. The community, located close to the state capital, has suffered repeated attacks and is largely abandoned as many locals fled after being unable to meet ransom demands imposed by the bandits.
Security sources said the army has already informed the families of the deceased soldiers, even as authorities remain tight-lipped about the full scale of the attacks.
