Nkechi Nweje, the Nollywood actress, has been laid to rest in
her hometown of Onitsha, Anambra state.
The film star died in March due to complications from a
stomach surgery she underwent in November 2024.
Her funeral service and interment were held at Awka road,
Onitsha, while the reception followed at Eze Chima Primary School.
Footage from her burial showed family members and several Nollywood actors paying their last respects at the venue where her coffin and portrait were displayed before being lowered into the ground.
Among the notable attendees were veteran actress Rita
Edochie, Ebele Okaro, actor Stanley Ontop, and former presidential candidate
Peter Obi.
Prior to the burial, Asaba-based Nollywood stars held a candlelight procession in honor of Nweje and two other late actors, Johnson Ododife and Gozie Alphonsus.
Nweje had a distinguished career in Nollywood, spanning over
decades and featuring in over 100 movies particularly Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha and
Royal War.
She was highly regarded for her portrayal of mother
characters and her versatility in acting.
She was also remembered for her remarkable contribution to
the industry and her free-spirited personality, with many describing her as “a
best friend, an adviser, and a mentor”.
She is survived by her husband, five children, and grandchildren.
