Lagos govt raises alarm as thousands ignore CofO applications

Lagos State Government has raised concerns over the widespread neglect by property owners in securing Certificates of Occupancy, C of O, in the state.

This concern was voiced by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Enterprise Geographic Information System, e-GIS, and Regional Planning, Olajide Babatunde, during a press briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday.

Babatunde stated that over the past six years, only 246 applications for C of Os had been received, with 649 requests filed for regularization.

In comparison, 4,690 applications were submitted for land surveys. He also noted that the low uptake of C of O applications reflects a lack of awareness among property owners regarding the value and legal security the document provides.

Highlighting the activities of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, Babatunde revealed that 8,663 property owners and developers were flagged for various building infractions within the past year.

The agency conducted 2,232 stage inspections to ensure ongoing construction works adhered to established standards and regulatory guidelines.
