United States President Donald Trump says India and Pakistan
have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire.
In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump said the agreement
was made after a long night of talks mediated by the US.
“Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and
Great Intelligence,” the US president added.
The Indian foreign ministry confirmed the announcement.
Ishaq Dar, Pakistani deputy prime minister and foreign
minister, also affirmed Trump’s statement.
“Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with
immediate effect,” Dar tweeted.
“Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the
region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
The announcement came as fears mounted that the countries’
nuclear arsenals might come into play.
Earlier, the Pakistan military said a top military and civil
body overseeing its nuclear weapons would meet.
Later, the defence ministry denied such a schedule.
Tensions between both neighbouring countries rose last month
after gunmen murdered a group of mostly Indian tourists in the contested region
of Kashmir.
India blamed Pakistan for the attack and on Wednesday,
launched strikes into Pakistan as retaliation for the killings.
But Islamabad had denied the blame.
India’s retaliatory hits triggered back-and-forth strikes.
World leaders and multilateral organisations urged both
nations to exercise restraint.
