Emeka Okonkwo, the socialite better known as E-Money, has
cautioned the public against naira abuse — a few days after his release from
the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody.
E-Money was arrested on Monday night at his Omole residence
in Lagos and taken to the EFCC’s Abuja office for interrogation. He was
released the following night.
The anti-graft agency accused him of violating the Foreign
Exchange Act by spraying US dollars at a social event and defacing the
currency.
In an Instagram post, the socialite emphasised the legal
consequences of abusing the naira or any other currency at social events.
He advised partygoers to avoid spraying money, suggesting
that cash be sprayed in a basket, bowl, or box before the celebrant.
He added that ignorance of the law would not be accepted as
an excuse, urging Nigerians to respect the naira and adhere to EFCC
regulations.
“Attention! The EFCC reminds us: Spraying Naira (or any
currency) at parties/events is against the law! Let’s celebrate responsibly and
avoid fines. Respect our currency,” he wrote.
“If you must give money at a party, make sure you put it in
a basket or in a bowl or box in front of the person at the party don’t drop any
currency on the floor.
“This is advised by the EFCC. Ignorance it’s not going to be
an excuse. Let us be aware and abide to the rules since it’s the law of the
land.”
The socialite’s case with the anti-graft agency comes a few days after Terry Apala, the singer, was remanded at the Ikoyi correctional centre for alleged naira abuse.
