Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has vowed to
personally stand with communities facing insecurity, declaring that he is ready
to abandon the comfort of his office if that’s what it takes to protect his
people.
“If I must take off this ‘Babanriga’ and join you in the
field, I will do it, In Sha Allah,” the governor declared on Thursday during a
condolence visit to Mansur village in Alkaleri Local Government Area, where
bandits recently launched a deadly attack.
The governor made the emotional pledge while addressing
families of victims killed in the assault. He confirmed that 21 residents —
including 13 vigilantes and 10 civilians — lost their lives in the incident,
which took place two weeks ago.
Despite the tragic loss, Governor Mohammed praised the
resilience of local vigilantes and security personnel, noting that over 60
bandits were neutralised in the fierce encounter.
“Despite their superior firepower, our brave vigilantes and
security agents stood their ground. This shows the courage of our people,” he
said.
Describing the attack as a “grave security challenge,” the
governor assured residents that he is working closely with the federal
government — including the Office of the National Security Adviser — to
strengthen security across the state.
He also revealed plans to recruit over 2,100 new vigilantes
across Bauchi State before the end of the year, beginning with 300 to 500
personnel from the most affected areas. The new recruits will be placed under a
structured minimum wage system and trained by formal security agencies to
ensure professionalism and accountability.
Governor Mohammed further urged traditional leaders to
assist in identifying informants working with criminal gangs, stressing that
community cooperation is critical in the fight against banditry.
“We are here to commiserate with the communities of
Alkaleri, Gwana, Duguri, Yelwan Duguri, and parts of Bauchi Local Government.
The federal government is aware, and support is on the way,” he said.
His remarks and actions reflect a firm commitment to protect
Bauchi residents — even if it means stepping directly into the line of fire.
