Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna state, says his administration
has not taken a single loan from any local or international financial
institution since he assumed office in 2023.
The governor spoke on Wednesday while fielding questions
from journalists in the Hausa language, as part of activities to mark his two
years in office.
Sani said several banks had approached him with loan offers
which he baulked at.
The governor said he has cut the allowances and some perks
of the secretary to the state government and his commissioners in order to run
the state effectively.
“The secretary to the state government is a retired federal
permanent secretary, who is also a former consultant with Food and Agriculture
Organisation(FAO). Some of my commissioners were receiving big salaries in
their former places of work,” Sani said.
“I persuaded them to forfeit their performance bonuses and
to use the old cars that their predecessors used in the last administration.
This is how we have been running the administration without collecting a single
loan.”
Sani said he leveraged contacts and connections to secure
grants from donor agencies.
The governor added that the Qatar Charity is embarking on a
mass housing project at the Millennium City, including the construction of the
Kaduna economic city.
He thanked President Bola Tinubu for “assisting the state to
navigate its financial challenges”.
